If that motor smelt any more fishy it would be getting landed at Hull and counted towards our fishing quota

If more people did put (fraudulent) chargebacks in, maybe the banks would have to do something about fraud, as it stands now they have absolutely no incentive to do anything, it just gets lumped on the merchant.

Yeah it's a scam- I'm not even going to waste time bidding on it. Just report it to ebay- it won't last long. I'm reporting it too.

Last Word...

Ebay have removed the listing, and I received this email today from ARG Marine:

"Yes, stay away from this guy. He stole our pictures. We sold this motor for twice what he is trying to scam. I reported him to eBay and they will remove his add shortly. Thank you and good catch. Always beware. He is a new member and a "0".

A.R.G. Marine"

It's not hard-all you've gotta do is look at the listing from the perspective of the criminal. Is there a way that he can take your money without having any goods? If the answer is yes then stay away. It's usually a bit convoluted because most people think 'oh, they won't go to that much trouble-it's too complicated'...
They WILL-it's not going to cost them anything but time-and if they have NO money then any result is a profit...

Ohhhh so i pay for the outboard via paypal and he then posts it to me!!!!!!

would like to see our posty with an outboard on his pushbike, haha

i have found that genuine people are happy to chat on the phone and let you visit and see the item before making the purchase, if he wanted it as an arms-length transaction then i would agree.......dodgy

Exactly. Couriering outboards isn't unheard of-but paying for an engine sight unseen before receiving it is asking for a bag of shite anyway and only a fool would do it.

You have to remember that while ebay works on the principle that people are basically honest, thieves work on the assumption that people that are basically honest usually assume everyone else is too-and most people who are honest are gullible.

Effectively it's a confidence trick-but with such a wide audience that it's going to snare some poor fool eventually. While it's costing nothing to set up and is relatively low risk, the scammers will carry on doing it.

Here's a bit of a story for you.

Where one of my friends live there was a twin-axle caravan stolen recently by the tinkers. They drove in in a plain white van, parked it as though they were going to hitch up so no-one could see them boltcrop the hitchlock and wheelclamp, then hitched it up and drove off as though it belonged to them, waving to the land owner on the way out.

If people don't see something blatantly amiss then they simply don't make the connection-and no-one WANTS to believe that someone isn't honest.
