Emergency "Mayday" Stickers

Icom UK have worked with the RNLI in the production and distribution of ‘Emergency VHF Radio Calling Procedure’ stickers. These useful stickers provide a prompt of the procedures a radio user would go through to make a VHF call. The stickers will be distributed with Icom Marine radios as well as distributed by the RNLI.

Vhf procedure

A very useful aid for both experienced and novice crew. It is notable how tongue-tied one becomes when the proverbial hits the fan.

thats a handy thing especially if you don't use your vhf regularly like me I just passed the course 3 weeks ago and forgot most of the stuff already

Are you able to write your MMSI / boat name details on the thing, and is waterproof? good idea though

Never been convinced about the need boat name AND callsign AND MMSI - quite a lot to relay clearly when under pressure esp if not used to radio comms.

I think the maximum use comes if I've fallen overboard. Sadly in the panic I expect my "crew" will say: "MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY, THIS IS VESSEL NAME 3 TIMES" rather than "MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY, THIS IS IMPOSTER, IMPOSTER, IMPOSTER".

I think anyone planning to use with a non-icom radio should also carefully consider if the initial instructions about hitting blue button then red button are right for their radio. I'm sure any of us could work around that - but would a guest? Even for an Icom radio, I think they could have done better [what's this "if DSC fitted"? - make two versions, with and without; is there an unnecessary step - does an icom not switch to 16 immediately after dsc distress, and would it not be useful to emphasise the need to hold the button for 2[?] seconds].

Always do the basics(just ch 16) but make easy for novices to read and repeat.

Yes a custom template that you enter MMSI into and then get printed online and sent to you would have been far more useful.

Yip a Cobra and SH the CH16 button is red. and depressing those for 2 seconds may put you on a working channel rather than 16.

Er would that be 5 seconds?

And er it should also say wait 2 seconds after releasing the DSC button to allow an ACK and auto re-tune to 16.

Then laminate it.
Did the one on mine years ago.
