Exactly 2 months ago I sold an ECU for a Yam F60, buyer paid, I posted and everything went fine until now.

The buyer has opened an "item not as described" case against me stating that the unit is duff, now I know the unit is not a dud as I tried it on my own F60 and it worked perfectly.

How long can he have the item before moaning about it, for all I know he's used it and a fault in the engine has caused it to blow. I'm reluctant to offer a refund as I'm pretty sure he will send me back his old unit and I didn't mark the one I sent him. What's the chance of it being something else wrong in the engine and he's blaming the ECU?

I feel that I'm about to have my pants pulled down and can't do anything about it.

What's the point in being as honest as you can about an item and getting shafted for it.

Its not ebay that is at fault here, it's the toe rags that are stretching the rules, or trying to, refuse the refund, and involve ebay, ensure you learn from this issue, and state a refund date next time, and mark the item or at least get the serial number next time.

Strange thing is I have a Yam F50 which "evidently" if you remove the restrictor and upgrade the ECU, viola you have an F60. I think hes got a good deal at the money if I had seen it I would have ripped your hand off and no issues. Regards Jim

It's for reasons like this that

a) I've never bothered with ebay.
b) A couple of mates of mine have given up on it.

I run a small business where I sell loads of used stuff on Ebay. The problems are very very rare compared to the huge marketplace at your disposal and high sale prices you can achieve for unusual items compared with any other selling method. The fees are also half that of a normal auction and you benefit from a well thought out selling and administration system.

So annoying that it is to get done for a few pounds (or even just an attempt) the benefits over a year massively outweigh the negatives.

A seller refused to refund me for a pair of cylinder heads that were not as described. Once I had told them that the "inflatable sex suits" listed under their 'other items' had caused a network alert at work I received a refund (and a rollocking from my boss) almost immediately.

And there is the difference between you & me.... One of the sort of events that's happened here and it becomes a significant chunk of my (non business level) sales over a year!

But it applies to private sellers even more so. Before ebay I rarely sold anything small. Now I can sell pretty much anything and in 12 years I have only had 2 problems.

I was wandering around the seller dashboard the other day and realised that I have sales of over 60k since 2002 (that includes 2 boats) but even without them its still over 20k in my pocket that I would not have had.

Plonkers and rip off merchants on ebay wind me up, as do the ever increasing fees (remember when it was just 1.5% final value ?) but the alternative is sticking items on Gumtree or Loot where they will take months to sell and realise a significantly lower price.
