Dangerous Whales

Just saw this, Whale slams boat in Mexico, killing Canadian tourist

"a fragile type with inflatable parts." Interesting description.

I actually had this concern heading in from watching whales with friends last year.

I can recall three or four other instances of this happening, one near you (Morro Bay - fishing boat.) Of those, I can only recall one other fatality.

Given the number of whale watching party and private boats, I'd say the overall risks are pretty low (and even less if you actually follow the MMPA guidelines for operating near whales.)

Union Times San Diego has an article that shows the actual boat (pre-impact.) Appears to be about a 24' (that's a guess) Apex RIB.

I hit a whale once. Was motoring into Monterey Harbor, just making the turn from open water around the breakwater and coming off plane, when a whale (probably a grey) surfaced about 5 feet off the bow. Had just enough time to pull to idle. Felt a solid thump on the keel and another as the motor dragged across, and that was it. Restarted the motor, told a friend of mine that was going out about it; he said he trailed it for about a mile and a half, and saw no cuts or blood.
