Camber Slip Write Up

From what I can see camber slip is not too bad. A nice steep drop into deep water with little tidal effect. You can also tie your boat alongside whilst you get sorted out.

However its ruined because you have to carry out a sharp right reversing manouvere in a narrowish road amongst cars that are trying to find somewhere to park.

The picture shows the narrow turning you have to get into. The barrier doesn't work it is just a pain. I also found that the nearest toilets had been closed because they had no disabled access ?

That is a classic example of the stupidity of local councils - ruin everything with a few posts in the wrong way - it's that nanny state control everything mentality they have!!!

they do it on purpose oh wise one!.

It is writ in the Magners Carter that you cannot prevent us British folk (herinafter known as Limeys) from gaining access to the river/sea. Therefore Local councils can't close down slipways too easily, but don't want people using them in case of compensation claims for injury, the odd child being run over etc.

So they make it way awkward for users to use the slip therefore reducing the riskof accident.

Some councils take a more enlightened view and control the use of the slipway, by charging and examing tickets and insurance....which for me is the way to go!.

I have to say that The Nashers revenge on its trailer attached to the back of my Shogun is a reasonable size rig, and I've never found it an issue reversing through the gate. Even with the fishermans lorry parked where it is in your photo.

The camber is my favorite slip at the moment because of its proximity to open water, and in my opinion its ease of use.

Perhaps there was a bit more traffic around than usual.

Agreed it would be a lot easier, but then there would probably be a harbour master standing guard and charging you to use it rather than just putting £2:50 in the slot to lift the gate.

But of course as you probably found out the first one in in the morning usually leaves the gate up, so as well as being in a good position and easy to use its also normally completly Free, and theres not many of those about.
The free trailer park is also a good asset.

I like Camber too, and had no probs the couple of time I used it with the SR 5.4. The Ribcraft is only a bit bigger, but granted you have a slightly longer car. And I agree the bollards are a pain, but such is life. I much prefer Camber to Warsash, even with the car park fees, and the slope of the slip makes launch and recovery a breeze, even single handed.

As Nasher said, proximity to open water is great, there's lots of space in car park before and after launching to sort stuff out, and it seems reasonably safe.

i like camber as well except the time i smacked the beemer wing on the massive post holding up that big gate thing to keep the water out.

but hey was my fault for the mrs not looking!!

I think its an excellent slip. Obviously nothing to do with the council, its a legacy thing.

But they are trying to do there damndest to muck it up. Minute trailer park and stupid poles to muck up your reversing. I wouldn't mind if they were all uniform and nice looking but they are all crappy and skanky.

And I get the feeling that leisure users have to suffer the working fishermen ! who just hog all the limited space leisure users have.

Notice leisure users can't use the nice pontoon but it was always empty when I was there. Its a little too far from where you can park a lorry so the commercials are never going to use it.

I read this thread with interest.

We are planning to use Camber for the first time on the 19th as we want to go over to Cowes and as Nasher puts it - it is much quicker from Camber than from Northney.

Is it all really easy to find - the slip, the trailer park, car parking?

So the gate costs £2.50 (is that the slipway?)

Other than the strategically placed bollards, what do we need to know - Nasher said said to time it so that the ferrys using their reverse thrust don't soak us.

Hi.
The slip isn’t immediately obvious, but not too hard to find.
Go in to the camber turn left immediatly, left again and the slip is on your right. Although you'll need to park up somewhere to sort yourselves out before taking the second left.
If I get the chance later I'll mark up an image from Google earth, unless somebody beats me to it.

I’ll be very surprised if you need to put the money in the barrier as it’s nearly always up.

Car parking is obvious and @£4 per day, the free trailer park is marked.

As promised, but using some very old images from live search.

Note the trailer park is now half this size due to some building work going on.
Also suggest you have a chain etc with you to lock the trailer to the Armco surrounding the trailer park.

It's not really that big a deal though, is it? How much space do you need? There are often fishing boats tied up alongsid ethe slip, and they may be unloading into a large lorry parked on the slip, but there's normally still enough room to launch a RIB.

Once you've practised your reversing a bit more you'll be backing down the space between fishing boats and dropping your boat off like a pro!

It belongs to the people who run the blue trip boats, and gets a lot of use picking up and dropping off passengers. There's nothing to stop you using it, but be ready to get out of the way sharpish if you see a blue boat heading towards it . . .

Looking at your annotations I would suggest using the car park as a better space to get everything prepared.

I've found that cars tend to come round the corner a bit fast for comfort when parked on the bit of road that you marked.

Sometimes need to be careful though, as if the car park is full it can be a bit tight to get a rig through.

We currently use wheel clamp and hitch lock - hopefully this is enough but I'll take your advice just in case!

Most wheel clamps can be removed easily and you can drag it away with a length of rope even if the hitch is locked.

Fair point - after all the work getting the trailer ship shape, I'd be well peeved if it was nicked.
