It sounds like the bungs we have in our jeanneau's where there is a screw on the back side which makes the bung compress more, and so get fatter when you use the lever.

All our bungs are tied onto the boat with thin line (inside & hull bungs) so they aren't lost. Especially as in those boats, you usually take the bung out to empty while on the plane - not the time to lose it...

Just make sure that when you put the bung in and 'activate' the lever to make it fat, that you cant work it out of the hole easily without undoing the lever. It may be they weren't getting fat enough for the hole and working loose

once lost my bung and finished up finding a carrott on a beach so i shoved that in the hole .

I used a bit of neoprene fron the handle of a car windscreen scraper for a couple of days.

I used to put the expanding bung on my old sr4 in from inside. It made no difference to how well it sealed and it's a lot harder to lose.
