Does the weight of the engine matter? 30hp is a bit lumpy to carry any distance. 20hp would go along nicely and be a lot lighter.
Speed on water is different to speed on land. My zap cat used to get up to 40mph or thereabouts and it was a real brown trousers ride even on the flat. My rib (30hp mariner 2 stroke) at 24.3mph (gps) flat out feels plenty quick enough, and would probably be the limit for small kids - they tend not to like getting cold wet and scared like adults do! And that boat will def weigh a lot more than a sib with its console and bits and bobs.

My 25hp weighs in at 52kg which is about my limit for lifting onto the transom and launching on my own. Will you always have someone to help with the setting up and launching or even better a trailer?
