Thornham Harbour

Well, I've not been out much this year for various reasons but today made up for all that. Glorious weather, a particularly high tide and the girls off on their own adventure the stars aligned for me and the boy to do some adventuring.

I've always wanted to try Thornham Harbour - for those not familiar with the east coast, just picture miles of mud at low tide leading to a distant sea and the chances of beaching very high when out and about if not careful to follow the buoys. Thornham Harbour (if you can call it that) is all but mud at low tide with a very narrow channel in. The buoyage/sticks are kept in the right channel by local fishermen. Today being a nice high tide was the perfect opportunity to launch at Brancaster and head up the coast to Thornham.

Normally Thornham is navigable about 1hr either side of high tide, Brancaster about 2 hours either side.

The pic is the public slip, really... with the tide still on the way out.

I made a wee video of the occasion, as you can see the car park and hard surface of the Harbour is underwater at high tide although this is only on a very high tide.

All in all a great day out.

Thornham Harbour

Great vid, looks like you and your lad had a super day on the water. Thanks for sharing.
The area brings back many memories for me as sailed/water skied out of Wells Next Sea as a kid. Shifting sand banks and muddy creeks/channels makes every outing a challenging experience.

Nice video. I'm amazed you can get out from Thornham. Last time I walked down from the Lifeboat it just seemed like mud for miles! Must have been the wrong tide/time of year..or both!.

Good stuff. Looks like a grand day out. Not sure I could be doing with those mud flats though!

Great vid Stig... those were just the sort of places I was drifting about with my dad 50+yrs ago... I'm a bit like Spartacus with mud though!

Fantastic thing about a non-trailed SIB is it takes up so little space tucked in the corner of the garage there is no stress if other activities prevent its use... but when you get the chance it's ready to get to sea.

Our two week Devon holiday gave us a year's worth of sibbing in that short period which is good because pre-holiday and now post holiday is so busy with other family stuff we will have an all time low for daily outings through 2017.

Nice video. I spent a lot of time at Wells next the Sea as a kid. I recently visited Brancaster Staithe, Burnham Overy Staithe, and Wells looking at launch points for future expeditions. It looked too much like hard work for me -but I have a 2 or more hour drive each way. Maybe your video will change my mind. Nice to see your son rowing.
