Would I need to prove it?
Now, as it happens, I asked that question of a nice dealer man today

The jist was (and we weren't too serious) that you can do this without too much trouble for racing, but you'll have to sign a guarantee never to sell the engine and you'll have NO warranty. He also reckoned delivery would be slow and the engine might well cost more than the 4 stroke, new. So very unattractive.

He also said he gets the odd secondhand one in

Outboards

If you type in "mariner 6hp vs mercury 9.9hp" on youtube there's a race between similar boats with these two engines.
The 9.9hp overtakes the 6hp of course, but it's not that much faster to be honest, although the boats only have one person on board.

Fair play to Mervyn. In honesty, I'm looking for a somewhat more bouyant rig :-P

Decision made

I've ordered a Quicksilver 270 Airdeck from Ron Hale Marine so fingers crossed. They seemed like a nice bunch of blokes on the phone, good price too...

Engine next.

I should have said that during the conversation, Ross Hale mentioned that they'd never had a warranty return on ANY Quicksilver SIBS, unlike some other brands that they have stocked.

However, they must have quite genteel clientele (not RIBnetters ) 'cos he was well shocked at the idea of planking a 9.8hp on her.

"ooooooh, far too powerful, much too fast!"

I can't wait

(btw, thanks Billy )

something else to consider ,or within reason ,just because you have a smaller boat doesent always mean that you will get up on the plane better for a given hp ,compare say an 8hp with 2 adults on board and a slightly larger boat ,though perhaps a bit heavier owing to been longer and perhaps that bit wider the larger boat sometimes will plane quicker and be that bit faster owing to having a larger planing area .

Point taken, but in truth I'm not looking for speed, just the ability to plane with two on board. A larger SIB is not an option for me. I'll keep yis posted on the rest of the package as it comes together.

Have bought SIBS from them before & they are a good bunch. Just round the corner from family for me !

My replacement ended up being a 260sd excel . First try tomorrow !
