My play ground.....!

Out of the 3 in Torbay, Brixham and Torquay have the easiest slips to use, and plenty of parking, BUT, all car parks in Torbay are bloody expensive. Brixham slip, you can get away without paying for launch and recovery most of the time, as, due to funding, no wardens on duty, same as Paignton. Torquay, you will have to pay every time, as the main Harbour Masters office is there.

Paignton does dry out, but is still usable. The sand is hard packed and can be driven on. Not so much parking, but same rates if you use the car park, but more back roads around the harbour where you can park car and trailer together, and not get stung for trailer fees aswell.

Totnes is nice and scenic, but you are restricted on the river with a 6 knot speed limit, and is quite a trundle down to Dartmouth (8 miles) to the open sea.

The slipway that you are reffering to is Oxen Cove, and is also under Torbay Harbour Authority aswell...! Not sure about being manned, but ample parking, and fairly easy access.

This maybe of some use to any one wanting info on Torbay..!

Great pictures Jeff.. I'm itching to get out for my part 2 running in session... but tide/weather/family and stuff need to coincide.

Not been to Brixham for 45+yrs but went as a kid as dad knew a hotel owner there. It sounds scary now with elf & safety etc but in the summer hols when we were down there I was allowed at 12yrs old to be the (supposedly) in charge person of the 13ft dory with 36hp Penta outboard the hotel hired out to the inexperienced for trips to Torquay.

Had a few scary moments in Tor bay with hirers who wouldn't listen to a kid. Once the wire steering broke at speed and we were lucky not to be tipped in... but then the hirers insisted on continuing the period they'd paid for flat out with one holding the outboard bracket where the steering wire was previously connected. So lucky that didn't end in a dunking too. I was so pleased to get back to Brixham that day.

I'm keeping my eyes on the weather for Sunday @ Mersea Island, tides look good, family is out of town, just need the weather to play ball and I can get the new OBM up to first service hours...

hi David
sounds like the torbay experience was a bit hairy but then we did stuff like that before we got sensible.
got chance to give the boat a good once over i am in the middle of changing things around a bit i found not enough room in the driving position foot wise so moved the console further forward and putting the tank back in there too. the bow box has changed things a bit too but for the better but the bow dodger needs a cut out putting in it a] to access the box & remove and b] to give leg room with the box out for fishing on the seat i am going to hinge the cut out to keep in position for spray when in rough conditions.also trying to read the chartplotter was a bit of a strain close in but moving forward 400 mm has made all the difference. engine & boat performance are great it was a bit rough on the last day but i got 21 kts @ 5200 rpm with still some throttle i will get a better trial up at ERR where i can pick some flat water i can then get a spare prop when i see max rpm, i need some WOT too to test fuel consumption as it is its not burning much but its not real just plodding around i want to know the worst case.
really enjoyed watching the kids jumping off the rocks some real slaps as they hit the water.

i bet your itching to get out the weather is great here hope it lasts.

thanks for looking cheers

My favourite boating area - those rocks look familiar.

We did a lovely trip round from Dartmouth last summer, I read in the local harbour booklet that there was a 2 hour (IIRC) stay of grace at Torquay but the HM was having none of it.

I often find myself checking in on the Dartmouth webcam wishing I was there...

I often launch at Brixham. There is officially a fee - 15.00 cash required but there is rarely anyone one to collect it. The fee does cover parking as well. Slip is steep but is fine alhough there's nowhere to tie up 2hours either side of low water when the breakwater steps dry.
