Poole harbour guide

Can anyone point me in the right direction to the best Poole harbour guide for sib's or offer advice on exploring this place.

I would like to know safe routes for my sib and where not to go etc?

Can I beach on any of the islands?

Thanks in advance for any advice that will help me and my family make the most of this lovely place.

You can beach on Brownsea, though you MAY get charged to do it. There's houses on a few islands-stay away from them.

Generally, stick the correct side of the channel markers in the wild side of the harbour and you'll be OK, but don't go nailing around as most of the wild side is a quiet area-no wake, max 6 knots.

It's a REALLY bad idea to go exploring that side outside the channels on a falling tide.
If you do get caught out, whatever you do DON'T get out of the boat onto the mud as there's springs running under a lot of it and you're likely to suddenly find yourself waist deep or worse.

It's up to the neck in Poole Harbour mud...

But seriously, I grew up playing in dinghies around that side of the harbour and the householders on the islands get somewhat shirty if you land.
Redhorn Quay and Goathorn are good for a visit but watch the channel at Redhorn as it ends between the last 2 markers. Be careful of adders at both places-they often sun themselves and it's easy to step on them. There's a lot of WW2 shrapnel,bomb craters and stuff lying around Redhorn from decoys that used to be lit there. If you look hard on Google Earth you can see what appears to be the shape of a decoy airfield in the swampy area.

Arne's been somewhat sanitised since I last went there and it's all a bit 'organised nature ramble' now which is a damn shame.

PHC do a very good guide to the harbour and is given away free. I think most TIC's have them, if not the Marina office of Poole Quay Boat Haven have lots.

Poole Harbor Commishioners do a great guide plus I think a map is included it it, try the tourist info centre to get one on poole quay or try and chandler in the area. Also but a decent marine map for the harbour.

Parkstone Marina have a nice spot for lunch on the edge of the marina by the water. Try the cruise round brownsea island which is relaxing and great scenery, also try a cruise through the harbour past the marine base and up the wareham river which again is very nice, you can tie off at wareham quay and then good places for lunch etc. Also check out Poole Quay, Sunseeker and into Holes Bay via the two lifting bridges, youve got RNLI headquarters in holes bay.

A quiet spot would be to cruise round to the Arne Penisular, nice small beach you could probably land on.

Top Tip, make sure you know the speed limits as they vary depending where you are in the harbour, mostly 10 knots but some places are 6 knots and there are some quiet zones, some no landing zones and some no anchoring zones.

and what the other said is all good - especially the beaches at Arne for a bit of lunch.

Short notice , but I may well be out tomorrow afternoon ....cant decide SIB or RIB ...

Could try and get the SIB out , but if there are Dolphins about by Swanage etc it can take its toll on my arm to hold the tiller .

Probably from Baiter about 1.00 to 1.30 ish with the SIB or a bit later with RIB ( as I cant take it to work !)

Thanks to all of you, I will check out all the information.

Sorry cant get out on the water tomorrow, wish I could but have to go to that place could work!

I'm new to this so it's good to know you guy's are so friendly and have lots of good advice that you are happy to share.

I've only been out a couple of times due to the weather, am I right to be cautious of going out on overcast days? How does my sib cope in slightly dodgy weather?

Goathorn is particularly nice but you'll see no landing signs, you can land actually though technically you won't be allowed beyond the high water mark. We landed there during a storm and sheltered under the trees with the kids, it was a stormy autumn afternoon when we were last there and the owner simply asked us not to leave litter and was very friendly, even showing us Goathorn cottage which they rent to tourists. Lake Yard at Hamworthy is also a nice place for lunch as you don't need to be members, just moor in the marina any place then go and ask for a berth as they don't seem to talk on the VHF, perhaps phone ahead.
