Of the "total" adults, I assume that you are one of them. "Total", that is.

I wrote tossers thinking no one would read it. the word doesn't mean anything in the States -- I actually had to look it up to see if I was using it properly. I apologize to everyone who responded. In the USA, the boat is quite rare except behind a Lego firetruck: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C2gw8YcpiC...8/s1600/l1.jpg

The tohatsu TLDI 40 is slightly too heavy for my boat, so I got an Evinrude 30, no battery required, that overall weighs 45 kilos less. This motor is apparently available in short shaft/manual pull because police departments like it. unlike the TLDI, it requires no power to run and no battery to replace every three years and tie down.

It should pull pretty well, but next time I'd buy a MK2 so that I could get a long shaft 40 and not worry about every 40HP motor sold in the US weighing more than the hull rating of the MK2C. where I live, apparently you can be ARRESTED for having a motor on your boat that weighs more than the stated hull rating. Plus, your insurer will not support you if you have some kind of incident, and any injured persons will be suing you into oblivion.

Thanks for the replies

That seems to be a sensible option FUTURA MK2. I would imagine 30hp pushes a 3.2 along quite nicely.
Insurance issues are the same here, but being arrested sounds interesting!
Having worked in the US, I understand how language can be misinterpreted - I was once told "kiss my fanny" by an attractive female colleague. She couldn't understand why I got so excited!
Sounds like you found the meaning of "tosser" the hard way, but its a good move coming back to apologise.

I used to run an Achilles 14 with a Honda 40 (max was 50); went well enough except when really heavily loaded with divers. I'm surprised Zodiac has a 12.6 rated for 40.

I believe the insurance part; where is it that law enforcement cares?

The 40 rating doesn't do much good in the US - no new 40 weighs under 206lbs, the max weight rating.

the NJ state police could arrest you for "reckless boating" or something along those lines. unlikely, but there is a tv show in USA about boat cops arresting people...
