dunnet bay visit in july

hi there,this is my 1st post to this brilliant site.i am going to scotland in july & staying at the caravan club site at dunnet bay.the site is right next to the beach.i am taking my quicksilver 3.40mtr earodeck with me plus my mariner4hp.does anyone know this area,i am not one for taking chances,i just potter about but ive been elsewhere in scotland eg,loch sunnart,loch linhnie & ardmair point above ullapool.i also went to ballylikey bantry county cork last year

I have ribbed around the area further West on the coast, its not the most forgiving bit of coastline in the UK.
I wouldn't be particulary happy travelling far in the area in a small inflatable except in sheltered bays. Its a particularly tidal area with strong tides, overfalls and lots of shipping.
Where exactly in the area are you intending to go and I'll see what the pilots say about the specific area you mean..

thanks for the replies.no way will i be going out to sea,i ll just go off the beach.i always ask the locals before i go out.if its not calm i stay ashore.we are staying there for a week,then making our way down to ardmair point just above ullepool,its sheltered there & its a nice trip across to martin island

As Bruce says, that bit of coastline is pretty unforgiving. It's a treasure-trove for sea birds and fishing. Take an anchor with you, hand flares, plenty fuel, etc. It's useful to have other boats in the area, for peace of mind. I'm heading out of Ullapool in July for my annual holidays to Lewis.

This is my area, i live in scrabster just along the coast and fish and surf this stretch between there and dunnet bay in my 3,8m SIB.

If you stay withen Dunnet head and Holburn head the tides are not much of an issue, Dunnet Bay itself is fully open to and any west wind and swell, There is good shelter from north winds and swell at the north east end of the bay and a very nice small shleterd beach for picnics etc called Peedie sands( small sands ) or secret beach about 500m round from the slip at dwarick. it is very much worth a visit. Very sheltered sun trap in N round to E winds and only 5 or 10 mins from the campsite in the boat. If the wind is strong from the west you can find shelter around scrabster and thurso bay 10 mins drive away, there is a nice slip by the yaught club in scrabster to launch from, Fishing is very good, mackrel, cod, ling and Sea Bass
