I also have a Snipe trailer with 'sealed bearings' - I have a complete axle set built up, which I swap out annually, and refit new bearings into the removed hubs. Bearings are < £20 per side if you buy them from a car spares store
I tow around 8-10000 miles a year, including ( for the last 3) a 2500m round trip to Italy >> and so far no issues. ( I too take the spare hubs on long journeys jic)
I do agree that part of the 'trick' is not to dunk hot bearings into the briny
...... of course, I have now tempted fate

How much of a distance does it take good bearings to get hot? Only ask as some slips I've been too I've had to park up a fair distance away to get everything ready for launch and then take the rig to the water so as not to bloke up the slip.

I knew there was a good reason for keeping a good distance from you, any one who uses the words bloke and slip in the same sentence has to be watched.

But back on track if you are thinking of places like Knott End you should not be traveling far enough or fast enough to warm them as it is mainly the use of the brakes that generate the heat in the hubs.

That was a typo and half! 'Block the slip' I should have said!

It wasn't knott end I was thinking of but at low water the slip can be along way down. Hate the walk back down from the carpark after you've launched there.
It's at a dock where I have to park near to the lock head and then drive back down to the bottom of the dock. No brakes on mine so shouldn't need to worry?

Gotta watch though... Some reccomend (like Alko) a maximum of six press outs, IIRC before changing the whole drum, presumably the id of the hub gets slightly worn and may not grip the bearing shell. Personally IMO this is a little cautious,.. but I did read this from someones blurb

Bigmuzz .... you are correct ; Avonride recommend similar.
However, they really do take some pressing out (and pressing in) >>> and the day they seem to be slack(er) you can always use 'bearing fit' ... red loctite

I have an SBS Trailer with the Sealed for life bearings and I get 2 years out of a set & then just swap them out. Bought the first set from SBS for around £50 a wheel but the last time i took an old wheel bearing into a local car parts store and they measured it and it was exactly the same as a V.W-Audi front wheel bearing which i got for £14.99 per wheel.! Delighted.! I would say they are EASYER to change than Taper Rollers on my old trailer. But I have access to a press at work.
