Thinking of changing my 4.6 X5, have a GL420 V8 on appro atm, stonking diesel motor, very fast, but lacks something, for near £70K.. Love Gerry build quality though (although its US) .... any thoughts from you esteemed gents on what you would have and why?

The new Twin Turbo V8 Diesel landcruiser Amazon is out early next year.

Should be a great new engine and Toyota quality.

compared to a Range Rover a X5 interior feels very cheep and mass produced. I have not driven the new RR V8TDI but if it is good as the V6TDI then I would not stop for a second in suggesting you spend some time on a test drive at the very least. the only thing is it is almost too nice to start firing wet gear into the back of.

What X5 did you drive and when ?.. the RR has panel gaps, tolerances and interior trim fit way poorer then the Gerry stuff from what I've seen (which surprises me) X5 interior stuff doesnt shake, rattle or roll either, its solid.. I'd like a rangy cos its big and can tow, and is king off road, but most of my stuff in this motor will be on road so I need it to be a cruiser too, and pull my rig

Ok, time to comment. If the X5 is a serious consideration, then dont bother with a FFRR. Try the TDV8 RR Sport instead. They are both in the same class.

It baffles me why folks think the two cars are in the same league

There are some good deals to be had on the FFRR TDV8 at the mo, but not much on the RRS. Reason being that there is a lot more FFRR stock about.

For me the Merc aint even on the radar.

Have you tried it though? the turbo 4.2 V8 diesel is very, very impressive, but its the small bits and pieces that let it down, rear seat movements etc and poor leg room when its in 7 seat mode, AND poor boot space when last set of seats are down

Sorry .. your credentials mean this post is invalid lol .. I just noticed that hehe

If you EVER want the ability to go off road - even briefly - then there should be no contest.

The RR has to be the king of the heap - especially the new diesel V8. If you want something to rival the X5 then get a RR Sport.

I have been test driving loads as I am trying to make my mind up which to get - the X5 is a great CAR but that is really all it is!!!

I came to the same conclusion you have about the Merc. To be fair it was dissapointing given that its a Merc.

Sorry about the bias. But prior to selling em, I used to be a freelance off road (and track) instructor. Bulk of my work was for LR but have worked for BMW, Merc, Toyota, Volvo etc.

Am I still alowed to comment, or shall I get me coat

Electrics and build quality on Yank cars are way behind.

Looking at the tyres alone that thing will be crap off road!!!

They all are unless you put a set of mud pluggin' BFG's or something similar on them. An X5 on Michy Diamaris is hopeless off road.

We have Bridgestone Duellers on a Shogun which are ok off road.

True but a Range Rover or Disco 3 come with tyres that are better suited to offroading. They are far from perfect but better than Ferrari style rubber!!!

I took a Disco 2 offroad a while ago on it's standard tyres and it was most impressive. We lost the track and ended up just driving across the Black Mountains - terrain was mixed bog - boulders and heather. Very similar to Clarkson's stunt driving up the Scottish mountain. It was raining heavily and we didn't even get stuck - traction control helped a lot!!!

just blown the gear box at 89k the X5 and range have the same sealed gear box trust me it will go
land rover 4.5k got mine done for 1500, pisses you off when you pay so much for a car and there known to have common faults but hey you buy a land rover you knows whats a coming,
would not change it for anything else

Really ? didnt know that .. Have often wondered how an auto box handles hauling a heavy load, with 350 bhp up at the front end without it hurting the box.

Anyone got any views on the Q7's ?
