I've been using a Volvo XC70 for the last year and it tows great and have not had a problem on any slips I have used, and its a TDi with 4WD

Audi Allroad tdi. The "old" shape ones are VERY cheap now. Air suspension, quattro, stunningly well built too, and easily chipped up.

I have an Audi A4 Quatro 2.5 TDI .... very good at pulling up slips.

However the tow bar is low and on some slips we have to puch the boat UP hill over the trailer axle before it will roll off the trailer. If the tow bar was higher it would be down hill all the way and gravity would make launching real easy.

Also the A4 estate is not that big in the boot ... my next will be an A6

Dont vw do a passat 2.0 tdi 140 bhp with 4 motion? I`m changing my bmw3.0d for something more suitable, but dont have a clue what to get. 3 sproggs, boat and economy? The passat comes with quite a good spec, but should be more powerfull than 140bhp. Might look at the 170bhp quattro instead....

Go for an old shape Allroad: less posey than the new ones, with air suspension that will lift to give over 8" clearance underneath, and lower to give good handling at speed if you want it. Then chip it up!! 220bhp and 450Nm of torque moves RIBs and horses very easily. some of the manuals even had a transfer box, but them is like hens teeth!!
