Also a vote for a D2, worth paying over the odds for a really good one. I have a nice 45,000 mile mint V8 auto for the right price
Ah the burble of that lovely V8, I'm almost tempted myself but the 90 is almost sorted now

If you are going for a Disco with the Tdi engine, I wouldn't recommend going auto, they struggle to get off the mark empty, yet alone towing. Check all of the inner body panels for rust including the floor. They are rustbuckets. Avoid putting them in any kind of water, as the hub seals do not keep water out (or oil in on the 200 Tdi models). The last of the 300 Tdi engines were not bad, they had sorted out the cambelt issues by then. A good one is not a bad all rounder, not in the same league as a Land Cruiser of course.

If you are looking for something to keep for 8-10 years I would not in a million years start with a six year old D3. Trust me, I was a LR dealer for 15 years - I still have my D2 for a good reason, and it isn't because I can't afford to replace it.

Lovely cars but something to buy, own for the warranty period plus maybe a year or two, and replace with another one. Designed for that, what happens to them at 15 years old is not part of the design. One we looked after had four turbos in less than 10,000 miles, and the electrics when they get old are going to be a nightmare.

A Defender is an acquired taste which you either acquire or you don't (I have one, I love it, I'd not be without it and neither would I drive it every day if I could avoid it). I don't know if you have ever owned one, but if you haven't, get a long drive first. You may hate it or you may be incurably smitten

The Defender isn't a model of reliability either, but there is nothing much too expensive, it's mostly fairly predictable what goes wrong, and most of it can be fixed at home if you are that way inclined.

Hate to say it but for that sort of ownership period I would be looking at Japanese vehicles.
And there in lies the rub, get a Patrol........a 3.0. You will not regret it and still have 10k left to throw on the bonfire that you'd have had with the Land Rover.
Bogmonster........good call, esp from a dealer.

Wondered how long it'd take. I reckon you could turn an 'ole drilling thread into a Patr'ole' recommendation ;-)

Much less than 10k a year for mainly short journeys.
Perhaps for 6 people on short journeys occasionally (110 then)

Currently looking at 06 or 07 D4HSE or 110, sub 60k

I like D4 as comfy, but will it last? Too many electrics, will it age and lose money more?
I have just sold my 110 king cab o6 leather heated seats, air con ,heated f an r screen, what a tool neva had any shit with it,sad to c it go.Got d3 3 wks now we will C
