worth it or not?

I've been offered a Icom IC-M503 for £80, fully working except the buttons on the handheld microphone dont work - but do on the unit itself, it also doesnt have the bracket so i'd have to buy or mount flush in the console - any opinions on these units?
should I go for it - I have no VHF at present

I have a bracket for a M601 that you can have if it will fit.

thanks guys, apparently the transmit button works fine. It's the channel change button which doesn't work. You have to change channel with the unit knob. The unit was sent back to Icom who fitted a brand new mike, charged £100. and it still came back faulty. -

hmm ,

Ollyit

Did you send it back or was it the previous owner?
If the Unit came back faulty it needs to be returned to us.
I am a tad concernend if it has been repaired for him, cost him £100 then he is selling it for £80.
That would start alrm bells ringing for me.

If you have had it repaired and it has come back faulty pplease send it in for my attention I will carry out a full investigation, if we are at fault the unit will be fully serviced and repaired at our cost.

Whilst Rouge has an issue with Icom we do have thousands of happy customers with this unit.
It is the standard fit on many MOD vessels in daily use, as was the unit before the M501.
If the unit was as bad as said these kinds of users would move onto another radio very quickly.

Our overall failure rate of serialised products is about 0.005%.

I hope that helps.

Regards

Thanks Jon,

No its not me who has sent it back, I'm seriously considering buying it though as a lot of people say Icom are great and based on the good things you have just said it has brought me some peace of mind - thanks very much

If you buy it, offer £50 and tell the vendor that you want a 12 months money-back warranty

Then kick him in the nuts to show that you mean business!

Oli, please don't kick Rogue Wave in the nuts, thats the ruffians from Reading solution, plus his nuts have a hard time as it is, constantly being immersed in salt water,

Do buy the radio, £80 is a bargin, send it straight back to Jon Brooks to get him to give it the once over and then fit it to your rib.

Pete

Oh shut up Stu!

Your views about Icom are more than sufficiently documented now, and you're stounding like a stuck record (There's a dying expression! Kids today don't even know what a stuck record sounds like -- "You what? It goes round and round and you balance a little needle on it. Weird!").
