VHF base station problems

I have just set up a base station at work, but I dont get very good reception, in fact its better with the handheld!

Heres what I have done, 1m SS whip antenna (0Bdb gain) secured to a mast on the roof (height of antenna approx 10-15m) using around 40m of 75ohm coax, the only joints are at the VHF and the antenna.

I'm not hugely vhf literate.

I would be hugley grateful of suggested fixes in order of simplicity/cost.

Cheers

Lee

Hi - Satellite/TV cable is 75 ohm, VHF cable is 50 ohm. I think the additional impedance over the distances you are talking about will strain your radio and cause performance issues that you are experiencing.

Is this just for listening in ? As I understand it (if you are going totally by the book), the device should be restricted as to what channels it can transmit on and be registered with OfCom. Check Ofcom | What type of Maritime Licence do I need?

Hope that this helps.

We have applied for a CSR marina license to use the radio.

Cheers for the advice on the coax.

I'd use a high (6 or 9db) antenna on land since it can be mounted vertically and stay there. And yes, 50ohm cable you need, RG213 would be the best without being exotic expensive.
