Garmin 7012...any thoughts on this one?

I have a garmin 7012 that doesn't appear to be working, The unit was taken off the boat over a week ago to bring home and dry out. when I put power on this is all I see, I can power the unit on and off with the power button and when I touch the screen I it makes noise but other than that it shows no maps etc..

any advice?

Thanks!

What are you powering it with? Have you checked the supply voltage & that it is true DC?

I am powering it off a 12v battery, putting a meter on the battery I'm getting 12.75v and 12.65v when unit is powered on.

What size boat did it come off because larger boats 45ft + usually have 24 volt - just a thought

I've sent bits back to Garmin in the past & they have been very good, even with out of warranty items. Worth a try.

Had a quick look inside the unit, don't like what I see...im going to leave the unit open for the night to get rid of any more moisture from inside the unit and look again tomorrow.

A little DeOxit and some Dow Corning 111 goes a long way...

That's quite a bit of moisture that's got in. They have a vent hole on them which I believe has a goretex membrane to allow vapour through but not water; but obviously vapour can enter and then condense! I had its predecessor a GPS3006 steam up (before they used bonded screens) and although out of warranty Garmin replaced for a later model for a very nominal charge of something like £150. They are very good with warranty but might not be so keen to help if you've opened it up yourself. Incidentally, most Garmin kit works on 10 - 30 volts.

Would be interesting to see more photos of the inside in case mine ever plays up.

The unit is about 6yrs old so well out of warranty, I might see how it is after some dry time. I think I will bring it to the local chandlery and see about sending it back to Garmin

+1

The Garmin marine warrenty / repair centre is in Southampton, always been fantastic with after sales service, even helped out on a unit out of warrenty. My next chart plotter will be another Garmin
