Adding an alarm to my RIB

Hi,

Where my RIB is currently, there has been an increasing amounts of crime to boats, as well as outboard being nicked etc. I was thinking of getting a car alarm with a proximity sensor to warn people when they paddle a bit too close to my boat, and then it goes into alarm if they do not leave.

I was also wondering if I could hook up an immobiliser to my Yam 703 control box to prevent the boat being started when the system is armed (despite my boat being locked to the mooring with some pretty beefy locks and chain)

Thanks

Cam

...just don't mention Trackers

I think the biggest problem with fitting that type is the drain on the battery. Plus does anyone take any notice of alarms going off nowadays.? I know the last time I was rudely awaken by one in the middle of the night the last thing I was going to do was investigate.!

Is your boat in the water or trailer when not used.?

Edit...just read the bit about people paddling to close- so I'll presume it's in the water.?

In that case you'll prob need most of your battery juice for bilge/starting etc...so wouldn't want an alarm draining that.

A spare battery that could be replaced/recharged every month.? I dunno what sort of current draw an alarm has.?

I'm sure you can pick up some cheap GSM module on eBay and wire it to the siren output

The main issue is when the boat is on the mooring, and when its not being used for extended periods of time, the boat is left on a trailer on private land, well away from the eye of the public, so my main issue is when its on the mooring, because thats when the most of the theft is happening.

I might pick one of these up (they are only £24) and see how much it draws, to be honest, I can always improve physical security rather than going to this

Lots of people use these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201084685451

You can then track where the robbers are taking your rib in real time.

To cure the expected draw on the battery due to an alarm, you could always fit a solar panel with regulator, this will keep battery full even in the darker months

Figure out where your main fuse is (under the cowl) and disable there before leaving.

Alternatively, a hidden switch on the 12V line should do (assuming electric start.) If not, a separate hidden switch on the killcord signal would prevent starting.

None of that will prevent vandalism or theft of less than whole boat though.

That'll be hard to find in the console and rip out - it's stamped up GPS Tracker!!

I believe the tk103b can use any payg sim but the tk102b needs a 2g sim. See the recent tracker thread for more details
