Yamaha 225hp - looking for advice

Found a Zodiac Medline III 2002 boat with a yamaha 225 four stroke. The engine has done 350 hours. Is this alot for a 225hp outboard??. Should i expect it to last much longer??. Looking for advice, much appreciated.

Our engine is a 2000 Yammie 200 2 stroke and has over 300 hours on it. Assuming the engine is the same age as the hull, 350 hours over 4 seasons is not unreasonable IMHO. If the engine runs for 5 hrs per day, that would be 70 days over 4 years or 9 weekends per year.

As long as the engine has been well looked after (serviced as per manufacturer's schedule and flushed through fully after every use) I should think it would be fine for a few more years yet. That's the difficult thing to check though! The service booklet should of course be stamped to show it's been serviced but how do you ascertain it's been flushed through after use? Maybe one of the forum experts can suggest something?

apparently many modern optis go on past 800 hours so would expect fourstrokes to go on well past that as well, if it has been services then is only approx 3.5 years of average use

Hi

I have such a engine, and it's clocked in at 653h at this day, at 500h I did an check off the valves and canshafts. They did not look like they have been used at all.
I exspect this engine to last at least 5000h The way I use it.
It's used in an searafting RIB, running mostly at 5000rpm or higher. THe only thing I do for it is following the service at each 100h, and only using high quality oil and lubricants.

So take it easy and run the engine hard, it's made for running at high rpm's. But it's very important to have the right propeller on it, so it can run at optimum rpm.
