Tohatsu thought's

hi guy's girls
thinking of buying a tohatsu 90 2004 era engine which is currently fitted to a 5.8 metre rib
engine has about 40 hrs on it & has given the current owner zero problems

is the tohatsu a rebadged mariner?

does anybody have a 1st hand experience with this or other engines?

one option is to remove & sell it & replace with a 4 stroke or a optimax which i have had no problems with at all in the past.

it seems from previos posts that you searider guy's look for this engine as it is a light weight & high powered.

so will anybody here be able to value (comit to a resale value) just in case we find it a little under powered
our use is going to be with cox & 6 fully kitted up divers 6m dive rib

any thoughts would be gratefully received

Tohatsu sell as Nissan outboards in the States.

I've never owned one but everyone I've ever spoken to about these engines hold Tohatsu's in very high regard, fuel consumption is supposed to be amongst to best too.

So is this a low tech 90 or a TDLI one?

The TDLI one will be more economical!

As for the size of engine for a 5.8m RIB. Why not buy it and try it before deciding. If you do resell it, you could wait till the warmer months and get a bit more for it than you paid for it.

No, but some Mercs & Mariners (small ones) are actually Tohatsu

John, doing a search on Google will tell you more about Tohatsu's than i can, but they are made by Nissan and have been making them for a very very long time and appear to get a good press.
I have a TDLi 90 on the back of a 6.2m. Six divers and myself from Appledore to Lundy and back on 45ltrs demonstrates it's good fuel economy.
Did that at about 4000 rpm at 22knts, so not flat out but obviously having to work with all the weight.
Went for economy rather than speed and am very happy with the result and performance.
A 90 on a 6m with divers will be ok but if you want some speed then a 115 may be a better result.
If I were buying again I would not hesitate to go for a Tohatsu, also got a Tohatsu 6hp auxillary and although have not used it much I am happy with that as well, pushes the boat along at 6.5knts at WOT.

can anybody make an educated guess about resale values, not sure if its the 90 tdli
question is the tdli direct injection loke the optimax?
i will have a look on google for some spec

This low hours, 2006 Twatsoo 90 TLDi made £3350 on ebay last week, from a dealer:

As the motor in question is a couple of years older (it will be wearing the old uniform) then, assuming it's a TLDi, probably around £2300 on private terms. If it's running on carbs, then probably £2k-ish.

Yes, the TLDI is oil injection.

i think i'm going to go -ahead & as discussed if it does not cut the mustard i'll take it off & put a 4 stroke on something like a 115hp or 130 honda

Really? I knew a lot of small Merc's were rebadged Yamaha's; never heard of them being Tohatsu's.

Wrong, Tohatsu makes them for Nissan, Mariner, Mercury in the range 3.5 to 30 HP in 4 strokes and 3.5 to 50 HP in 2 strokes same models. Tohatsu and Nissan are presently being comercilalized in USA, Nissan has slight more price. Brunswick Corp has a joint venture with Tohatsu in their Japanes manufacturing facility at Komagane plant along with big core parts for bigger Merc/Mariner engines.

upgrading to the v4 yammie may well be a good call. but I think the Honda 130 Honda will be a Heartbreaker they weigh nye on a quater of a ton and that will have a horrible effect on a short rib. Also the power to wieght is awful just not ribbish

I had a Tohatsu 90 on a searider and it went well nice balance. I don't know what they are worth
