Steering Bracket ?

Hi,
i'm a new to ribs & have just purchased a Avon Searider 4m, i've swapped my engine over to the rib, but i've a hit problem, it appears i need a bolt/Pin to attach the steering cable to the engine & some sort of bracket for the transform to hold the steering cable in place............i have no idea what i should be looking for & perhaps theres some sort of kit i can buy, but i'm hoping some kind person here has had the same issue & could advise me on what i need/ask for ?, so i can be on the water & not just reading about it !

Jeff,

Somebody should be along soon with the right part for you. I had this problem a couple of years ago and had to buy a part from the engine dealer. There are kits available maybe you should go back to the engine dealer.
Have you got a make and type of engine ? That might help.

Thanks for the reply the engine is a Mariner 45 apparently 50hp........., my old steering had a vertical bolt which attached to engine, but the rib steering just has a open hole in the end...............

You'r in luck...I have a pic of what you need.

Steering cable passes through pivot tube then links to motor via the arm you can see.

SOMEWHERE I've even got a pic of exactly the same setup on a mariner 45. Not sure where it is now though.

All you need to do is ring a dealer and ask for a steering link arm for a Mariner 45.

I just added that in an edit while you were posting. It's a Steering Link Arm Kit.

Most Merc/Mariner dealers will be ale to get it. Not cheap (around £40 from memory) but it comes with all the brackets and bolts you need.

BTW,You'll need to clean the tilt pivot tube out before the steering will fit through. Best thing to do is use a length of old threaded bar like a file to remove the crud that'll be in there. It took me about half an hour to get the cable to fit through last time I did it. There's very little room in there.

Ah............it was going so well, theres no way on this planet my steering cable is going to fit through there & i can't see how it can come apart..........

It'll fit. It'll just take a while.

The other option is to buy a new tilt tube.

Matt,

Thats the same setup as my old boat. I'll have a look tonight for some pictures, I'm on another PC at the moment. What we are looking for is a bracket that holds the steering linkage away from the transom and he should just need a nut and bolt to hold the linkage on to the engine.
I've had a search on Google for the item but no luck yet.

If it's the type that bolts to the transom and clamps around a split nylon ball that clamps around the end of the outer of the steering cable (!),I have one of those you are more than welcome to have.Give me a shout on 07767 702104.

Hi,
thanks DavyBuoy sounds very much what i need, so it's just a clamp to the transform & a pivot arm, sound's a lot easier then trying to get it through the tilt pivot tube..............i'm just waiting for a marine shop to come back to me as i've been on the hunt, but more than likely if you don't mind i'll give you call over the weekend, i'm in Sevenoaks kent by the way..............

I don't think it was homemade. Just very difficult to find. Might be worth driving round a few outboard dealers or small boat outfitters. Maybe something will come up on here in a couple of days.
