I suspect that no amount of proof would change some people's minds. Much like the people who swear that Nurofen is better than Tesco's own ibuprofen or Anadin extra is much better than some asprin and paracetamol.....

Yup.

You have to. Totally synthetic 0/30 viscosity. Castrol are the onyl company to make it for the VAG Pumpe Duse Engine.

My A3 went back to audi after engine problems and I'm sure the non-synthetic stuff caused the problems.

dont skirt around the issue and request, you get the product identified and proof that it is ok to use from mercury and i will get this confirmed with barrus.

in the mean time those of us with warranties will be using the recommended stuff.

Plenty of people make fully synthetic 0/30 oils. Mobil 1 for example.

http://www.millersoils.net/1_Millers...UTO_RETAIL.htm

This oil retails at £7 per litre and it specifically mentions the VAG engines.

"Volkswagen is facing another investigation by Mario Monti, Competition Commissioner following a complaint to the EC by the European Union of Independent Lubricant Manufacturers. The small engine oil makers have accused VW of attempting to collude with two major oil companies to distort the market. From 1999 to the end of 2000 VW insisted that its dealerships could only use Castro or Esso engine oil when they serviced VW models such as Golfs, Polos and Passats. Both Castro and Esso paid VW to become exclusive suppliers to VW dealerships. The European Union of Independent Lubricant Manufacturers has gone to the Commission arguing that their products were of equal quality as Castro and Esso but the VW agreement meant that their 400 members were effectively shut out of the market. Mario Monti's spokesman has confirmed that the Commission is investigating the matter, but that it was too early to anticipate a ruling. (Source: European Voice)"

I'll be in the market for some XD50 for my DFI Evinrude soon, is this the same grade as Opti oil, I don't think it's synthetic though?

But Cod, surely if a manufacturer says you must use X to keep the warranty on your £28k car or £10k engine would you not pocket your pride and just pay the extra for the peace of mind?

I mean if your car or engine blew up and they turned round and said your not using the right stuff, therefore your warranties stuffed, you'd be standing there looking a bit pissed off!

And before you say it yes you could go to court and put a good arguement forward but is it worth the hassle??

Also its worth considering that bottles of oil are not just oil. They have lots of "extras" that help an engine work properly and keep it clean as well.

NO cods you dont get it! and i understand you dont have a warranty to care about so yours is a very different situation.

you have not been able to come up with a confirmed agreed alternative to dfi oil for optis........i have asked if you can google and come up with something......nothing.....not even your self confessed brain the size of a planet can find anything

so in the mean time stop piping up that we are all mugs and you are the only one in the know..........our warranty depends on specifically using quicksilver dfi or quicksilver premium plus.

give me peace of mind and warranty over "cods view" any day!

I thought any TCWIII oil was sufficient from a warranty perspective.
Are you saying this is definately NOT the case?

like i said, you have to come up with confirmation that mercury/barrus are happy with the alternative oil, i have the name and phone numbers of contacts at barrus so can quite happily follow up with them to get it confirmed.

Not sure what sort of oil opti oil is but if it is a high grade synthetic or semi then £30 for 4 litres is about the going rate for any make .
I doubt the rock oil would be any cheaper.
I know from friends in the trade that there isn't much to be saved on high grade oils .

However if the Rock oil looks the same and the spec is the same and its much cheaper (which I doubt) then who woulod ever know if you used it . Even if you had a major warranty claim would it even be possible or likeley that the oil was analysed . Also if the motor went pop then empy and refill the tank with opti oil before sending to the dealer .

The VAG 0/30 castrol oil is about £11 a litre if you don't buy from the dealer or £40 a gallon.
