Are you using fresh petrol?

Take air manifold of and open the throttles up, is there any petrol squiring out the jets of the carbs?

Try this

I often carry so Bradex Easy Start.

You can get it from a motor factors, possibly Halfords, or some chandlers.

It is ether based and you squirt it onto the intake, or even remove the air filter and squirt some in, it normally starts anything, but wont fix a problem.

Check fuel is new as well.

I carry it on my boat for emergencies.

Hope this is useful.

Chris

DONT EVER use easy start on your engine. It strips the oil off the internals and can break rings. It's also explosive. It has no place on a boat-ever. IF your engine needs it to start then your engine needs attention and you shouldn't be using it.

Well if you open the throttle quickly it should actuate a manual fuel/carburetta pump that will squirt a visible jet of neat petrol into the venturi. If it doesn't it could indicate that the diaphram in the pumps gone, but I doubt that both have gone. I was lead to believe this was a common problem after over winterization due to the rubber being in contact with old fuel. The other thing that is common on overwintered engines with carbs is that old fuel leaves a varnish residue in the bottom of the float chamber, this then breaks off and clogs the jets.

I also agree with Nos4r2 and suggest you sort the problem rather than use the addictive either based starters. It shouldn't be nessesary and won't correct your problem.

the only thing i have realised is my throttle is combined with gear shift so i wont be able to open it whilst starting as it locks it centrally
unless i can open the carbs by the linkage on the outboard will have a look tomorrow this was the first time i have winterised the motor in the 3 years i have had it and i wont be doing it again!
so it could be the fuel pump that has gone faulty are these repairable
or do you have to replace .i suspect it could be something like a fuel pump purely because i havent had any hint of a splutter from it all day which to me indicates a failure to all cylinders
its a 3 cylinder 97 merc 50

No, like nitroglycerine.

Many years back I went out to do an insurance valuation with a diesel fitter on a tractor that had run over a can of easy start. It had blown it on its side and burned it out.

When you start an engine with it the explosion is so fierce when the engine first fires that it can break the piston rings.

Do you not have a fast idle lever?
