The Suzuki is like this. You need to:

1. Take off cowl
2. Lift off the cowl seal.
3. Remove the pin that retains the cowl latch, and remove the latch.
4. Remove the philips head screws that hold the two halves of the upper cover together. From memory, there is one under the cowl latch, one at the front of the power head inside the cowl, 3 or 4 on the right hand side of the upper cover.
5. You can now remove the right hand side upper cover - the only thing still attaching it to the engine should be....the tube connecting the telltale to the block, approx 5mm diameter x 20cm long.

I haven't disconnected it, but assume it unplugs from the telltale 'nozzle' at one end and the block at the other. You can then blow through the tube / see if you get any water out of the block with no tube attached.

Let me know if you get stuck and I will double check mine.

I found blowing a jet of compressed air or a high pressure stream of water into the telltale on my Honda 40 would often clear things up. For some reason, it was pretty sensitive to clogging up (may have been from blowing the crap back into the motor though, now that I think about it.)

Could well be a woodlouse or similar has crawled in there I suppose.

It is annoying you can get Tohatsu and yamaha manuals online but not Suzuki so thanks Chris!!!

Thanks for the help everyone - will have a quick blow and if no joy will take it apart properly.

I had the same thing with my telltale at the weekend. Nothing from the telltale, removed tube inside - still nothing, tube comes from top of fuel cooler unit (!)-engine is a mercury 30EFI, so blew back into system, seemed to do the trick. Ran the engine for several mins afterwards in cutdown 45gallon plastic drum with water, water from telltale all the time. it will be back in the water this weekend, so i'll let you know if other issues. I'm not expecting any!!

I did that trying to syphon some water out of a tank, hose was full of the little gits!

Codders you didn't clean and polish your engine did you? I did this on my Mariner and the tiny tell tale got blocked with polish. Quick blow and it was sorted.

Well finally got around to it - dropped the lower unit and checked the impeller - it's spotless and looks like new. No sign of the key having slipped out either.

Next step I suppose is to do what Chris says and go further - so annoying as it was fine when last used. Could it also be in the thermostat???

Have blow compressed air up the pipe that comes from the pump - also shoved a flexible plastic rod up there. Seemed to be a few restrictions but got it through in the end.

It may have cured it I suppose but whilst it's hanging off the engine crane I may as well go the whole hog............

could the impeller be turning on its centre bush, i know a few that have done that , even with a reletivley new impeller where the bonding has gone leaving the shaft /key and centre bush turning but the rubber blades not or slipping , with regards to the thermostat its not that bigger job if your carefull ,just make sure the whole thing goes back together level and the gaskets ok ,and dont over tighten the bolts , mart

I've had that once, unlikely on such a small motor though I would think.

Problem solved - after changing the impeller to be safe - removing thermostat and stripping the engine quite a bit it turned out to be a bloody paperclip - yes a paperclip!!! I can only assume that the 1st owner had rammed it up the tell tale to clear it and "lost it" - because it was almost strailght it could be pushed up no problem but then would slide back down and block it again!!!

GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah well at least I have a freshly serviced engine even if it didn't really need it.
