Mercury Redline 60 HP (Not Clamshell), circa mid 90's

Hi all

Just bought the above engine with boat. Seems very clean and runs pretty well. However I noticed a very small intermittant dribble of water coming out of the top of the engine At the top of the engine block there is a plate with 4 bolts in it. There is also a small hole in this plate. That is is wher the dribble is comming from. i don't think this is normal. Engine pumps water OK. Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers in advance, buzzin hornet

Sounds like the Diaphragm in the thermostat housing is split or leaking. The diaphragm is the pressure relief valve which keep the the block pressure the same. If the diaphragm goes it will leak past it and out of the hole. Item 24 on the attachment.

Parts now installed and engine running fine. Tell tell pressure still the same (OK, would say a bit on low side). Would you suggest an impellor change to rule it out?

Engine temp looks ok, and there is plent of water being pumped out od the lower leg outlet.

Regards

Scott
