Nice to see your depth sounder is working well.
If you had a stainless you might have just got the ting ting ting of the blades hitting the rocks!

Nearly had the same happen to me tonight. Fish finder said I had 45 ft under me, next thing I've got a deep black muddy wake!

The trouble with depth sounders is that it gives you depth under the transom, it can be very surprising how fast dredged channels can disssapear in an instant. I very nearly got stranded high and dry one time too. Luckily I noticed that the water surface I was heading into was disterbed and managed to get her into reverse before I hit the bank.

I'm a great fan of alloy props too for just that reason. With my old RIB I did some trials with different Stainless props and found the Genuine Yam prop to be on par performance wise to the Stainless ones I tried.

I agree with hightower. This is the reason I won't put a stainless prop on the engine as all my boating is around rocks. Still having said that I haven't hit anything yet in the 3 1/2 years I've had the boat

. Touching hairy wood very quickly having just said that to try and ward off the evil demons

Its amazing how much vibration it caused & I really should know better . I'm sure yamaha spent a bit of money designing thier engines , legs etc just not designing them for this !

Where did you do the damage?? Was it in a wave trough at the enterance to the run?

I had concerns about this on the way in, but managed to surf a wave virtually all the way to the quay! More than 8knts SOG, but only 4kts on the paddle wheel ...

That's a pretty good illustration of why I'm not a great fan of standard ally Yamaha props-they seem to lose large chunks like yours did rather than bend.

It's a shame there isn't an easily available off the shelf alternative in the UK.

Yep -took the big boat in & out fine , then tried the little one & this . Never mind - I have spare & within 5 mins its good as new. No sign of any damage to anything else - as has been said good reason not to stainless .........

There were some big swells / breaking waves in the the run & I was more concerned about getting caught up by one that really looking at how close to the middle of the channel I was ( i think its abit off at the outer end anyway judging by the break ) .

Was hoping for a little sun tonight to go to yarmouth for a drink / dinner - maybe another day unless it clears in the next hour.

If I venture into area's of known shallowness I always trim the engine up as much as possible without losing thrust and steerage.

Indeed a good idea , but in & out of Christchurch in the weather we have had, and in the narrow channel its always a bit of gamble in keeping the control without risking the prop........

I have a couple of bent alloy props and am quite happy to keep alloy for the same reason though I do seem to have stopped rotavating the beach in the last year or so, the prop I have does have some chunks out of it but that was something I hit in the water, never did find out what it was but it wasn't attached to the bottom.

Know how you feel: I hit something coming back in off the SF Bay last New Years; snapped the fish finder transducer clean off (it was on a kick-up mount, but apparently wanted to kick up higher than the mount would allow.) No prop damage, though; suspect it was a piece of lumber or similar.

So, $50 or so for a new transducer, and probably an hour and a half pulling the damn thing in... (Have the old one wired and glued together for the moment; seems to be holding up OK.)

Can't you set an offset into your sounder so you get the depth below the skeg?
