Honda 90 gear shift issue

I have a problem with the gear shifting on my Honda 90 and wondered if anyone has a similar issue or could offer advice.

The engine is connected to a Honda side mounted control using teleflex cables.

When i shift forward, it will engage. If i shift into reverse, it won't engage and just graters. The engine will shift fine with the cable removed and the shift shaft turned by hand. If i adjust the shift cable i can get the engine to shift into reverse, but now it won't shift into forward. It appears that these must be some play in either the cables or the side mounted control.

I could replace either or both the cables and the control, but before I spend money replacing anything, i was wondering if anyone could offer any advice as to how i can pinpoint the issue?

Thanks

I had the same problem last year on one of mine found it was worse straight after the engines had been trimmed right up for trailing etc
So I adjusted the cables worked ok for a while but wasn't 100% but found if I pushed it full forward and back it was ok after that.
Not sure what it will be like this season as I've got both engines off at the mo and new cables will be going on 😳

Sounds like worn or stretched cables, it's made worse if you have any coils or multiple bends in the cables. If the inner cable stretches or the outer wears on a bend or coil, the inner gets relatively longer in relation to the outer. You don't have enough "throw" in the control box to overcome the extra length of cable, if that makes sense.
