Homemade Motor Trolley

Really just an excuse to test uploading pics from iPhone now admin have tweeked site following demise of the App.

Anyways, ever since Oldman2 of this parish brought to our attention these Russian style AV plate support motor dollies, thought I ought to knock one up. So at last I did, two in fact.

No welder so had to resort cobbling one together in leftover ply, timber, and hardware from the workshop. Just a couple of lengths of threaded rod and some nice new yellow wheels were the only expense.

Whilst I was at it also made a transom clamp dolly to easily load motor into car….although doubt I’ll ever use it. An unwanted set of transom wheels seemed just the ticket for this.

Very impressed with your efforts, Chipko. Doesn’t look as bulky as conventional trolley. I spotted your comment on the app. I cant access mine recently- can’t get past log in page. Is this universal?

Yes, the app is gone. I never used it myself, but understand it is missed.

Thanks for positive comments guys. Dolly seems to work well, surprisingly stable, and allowing transfer of motor directly on/off transom without involving any lifting.

Lovely work. Seems like a good idea but does it put any significant pressure on the plate itself? I'm in need of another couple of trolleys so I might steal your design and give it a go.

You do yourself an injustice sir when you say "cobbling one together"!

However I am thinking along the same lines as Username, will it not put a lot of strain on the AV plate?

Good point and too early to tell, but I seriously doubt it. Tried 26, 36 and 47 kilo motors on it and all seemed fine to be honest with no flex in the AV plates.

I did actually make one of those in steel before going "full Russian" but I ended up so concerned I would scratch/mark or even damage the motor AV plate that before even trying mine in anger I swiftly moved on to the other design.
For anyone getting to the point where they don't want to lift the engine onto or off the transom any more, both are I feel worthy of a second look. I like the transom wheel remodeling excersize too, so much easier to load & unload from the car with this method.

Yes can understand your concern although after building ours am fairly confident no damage will occur to the AV plates.
Not sure how the Russian jobbies clamp down but made ours with 8mm spacers between plates and lined with 2mm butyl rubber sheet, so not actually clamping AV plate at all. In fact, if not wanting to move about, the motor quite happily sits on lower plate even without the top plate fitted, and seems well balanced.

I think the AV plate trolly and tansom mount dolly has great potential for extending the length of time I would be able to use a 47kg 20hp efi, and not have to go to a lighter outboard. However I'm trying to figure out how the transom mount dolly could be adapted to be used with a 4 stroke that has to be laid down on one side.

Steve when you outboard is on the transom and on full tilt, do you worry about what side its leaning towards or straight ahead with respect to the oil then? I guess no, so just make sure the outboard is at that angle and no less when in the back of the car on its dolly. I cant see how that's any different.
