Does anyone have a 4 stroke on a sr4 Avon Searider

I am looking to upgrade my engine. There is currently an interesting used 50 HP Etec for a fair price. Seems about the same weight as a four stroke. Currently have a 2 stroke 40hp merc that is tired, always has something wrong, has no power tilt and is very light.

Thanks for any input. I sure would like to have more reliability heading out in the Pacific~

The boat will be quite stern heavy with the E-tec, the max. transom weight for the SR4 is 110 KGs.
You're propably better off with 40-50HP yamaha 2-stroke with powertrim.

I think either the later Merc 50 2 stroke or Yam 50 2 stroke is what to go for, with PTT.

Biggles had a first gen injected 50hp Suzuki 4stroke on an SR4. Went ok, but a bit rear heavy.

We used to have a 25hp four-stroke on one of our SR4s. The most obvious problem was the lack of power, but the weight distribution wasn't right either. It liked to take off at the front when you hit a wave and come back down again alarmingly stern-first.

A current E-tec looks to be around the 110kg mark, which I think is about the same as our old engine was. We're using a Mercury 40hp two-stroke now, and the boat does feel much better balanced than it used to.

A Honda four-stroke might be OK — the current BF40 and BF50 are 97kg. That's still 22kg or so heavier than a current Mercury 40 two-stroke, though.

maybe it's because you don't make any money servicing them
When you say "set up" what do you mean exactly?

Made my own from an old serial cable & a 3 quid plug off ebay, though they've gone up to a fiver now. The only setting up I can think of is setting the TPS which is a 5 minute job. Assuming that you are buying from a dealer, he would do this any way as part of the rigging.

We have a 03 Yamaha 40HP 4 stroke, it is quite stern heavy, but we have had it in the solent with 5 up and got up and went eventually. Is very economical, Lymington-Cowes-Lymington on about 1/2 a tank with the hammer down.
The only down side is that on your own at high speed it is very flighty, and wobbles badly. Put a second person in and its usually fine.

I've just put a 4-stroke Mercury 60 EFI on my 4.7 Searider to replace the Suzuki 75 that was on it . So far it's great - similar performance but much better fuel economy.

Merc mariner 50/60 efi weighs just under the 110 mark. Bout 5kg more than the 94 on 50/60. I once had one with an 85 yam obit which was entertaining to say the least. Would say you'd be fine with 50/60 in general most will be fine bar the Suzuki df60 which is a heavy lump being based on the bigger 70.

Your DT75 Soozook couldn't have been well if it couldn't outperform an F60efi.

Thanks for all the input. The etec unfortunately seems to be on the heavy side at this size. The Honda is looking more promising. Anyone have any thoughts on the carbureted Honda 50?

To qualify the performance comment...
With one-up, at WOT both the Suzuki DT75 and the Mercury 60EFi have enough power to get the 4.7 going faster than I was usually comfortable at - with pretty much just the prop left in the water.

Maybe when we fully load up the Searider with 2 people and lots of fuel and kit for going round Ireland I'll miss the extra 15hp, but so far it seems like a good set-up.

That doesn't sound right. Something must've been set up incorrectly or you were being brutal with the trim button. Motor set too low perhaps?

So Mollers, in between answering other members questions..... Give me a rundown of your top 5 outboards you would fit to an SR4.

I want to fit a modern, new or nearly new engine, around the 50hp mark. Would like a 4stroke as im not to fussed about going faster than a comfortable planing speed but appreciate the weight penalty in doing so.

What do you reckon?

Ta
