Auxilary for 7M rib

Hi There
I need to install an aux/kicker on my 7 M LOMAC. I aslo want to use it for trolling while fishing. The RIB already has a bracket installed. I know there has been considerable debate on this subject but here is my situation. I want a 4 stroke as I have an EFI Merc. main engine and therefore I will not need to mess around with pre-mix fuel. The best deal in the US is the Nissan/Tohatsu 6 hp. @ $1250.00. Tiller with pull start and XL shaft. It only weighs 59 lbs. and is black so it will match the Merc. I know this may be a bit marginal if punching into heavy seas/tide but it will certainly allow the boat to achieve displacement hull speed. Does anyone have experience of a similar set up?

All depends on how far you want to go and what the tides doing. I have used a 9.9 Merc to move a 6.6m rib around the harbour and that was fine. We also tried a 3.5 on the same boat which wasn't very effective at all. I have a 15 2 stroke mariner which I will be occationally using as an aux on my 7m which should do the job in the Solent OK.

Tide is not a problem for me. 0-1knot. Yes, I am well familiar with the conditions in the Channel and Solent and I do not have to contend with anything close to that. The 9.9 was my first choice from a performance standpoint but that is an extra 50 lbs. and 1000 bucks.

Would you consider getting a used one? I personally would rather get a used 9.9 than a new 6.

I think the trouble with the webcam is that the sun makes it look quite hazy. I'll have a tinker with the settings later on and see if I can make it bit clearer.

Used 9.9 engines are sort of scarce and hold their price well. My 7M is set up much like yours with the console well aft. so I am also concerned about weight. I am still working on the project so have not had the boat in the water yet. What sort of performance do you get?
BTW the reason the web cam is dark for me is the time difference of 8 hours.
I mean black.

Performance, well, with the main engine, we can do 46 knots with 8 people, full of fuel and all of our kit. With the aux, I recon about 10knots maybe on a good day......

I would be well pleased if I can get close to that with 4 up and full tank. I have a 4 blade 17inch prop. Does that sound about right? The boat is a commercial grade ex-dive boat and is built like a brick s/house so is probably heavier than an average 7m. Dry weight is speced. at 650kg.

Linda,

Have you considered the high thrust options from Yamaha.

They have a reduction gearbox which means th propellor spins slower but it is a bigger propellor which means it has a better grip in the water and can move a much heavier boat. The better grip is especially better in rough water. all told with the hig thrust option you get an auxillary that will push you along quiet nicely.

Yes, I have and the T8 would be my first choice. I am not too much in a hurry so I will keep my eye open for a used one but it will have to be sort of a bargain for me to put up with the extra 50 lbs. compared with the Nissan.

I have previously had an auxillary on my 6.5 redbay. 6hp. Problem was it was useless on any sort of a bad day. It was ok on a good day but who needs an au on a good day? I suspect on a boat your size you would need approx 15 hp. hence I thinkthe high thrust would be a good substitute.

Thanks JK for the "relocation service" Have just researched the Tohatsu/Nissan 9.8 and it is only 82lbs. I guess I can live with that. Cost is another $700 ( $1965 inc. shipping and no tax.) over the 6 hp but I guess I can live with that too.

I've got a 15 hp 2st aux on my 6.5 m and get 8 knts

Its a pull start and has a separate tank on deck to give 100% back up if that’s possible
