Engine Setup

Hi currently looking to replace a twin 2 stroke 60hp mercury setup for a single four stroke and looking for recommendations personally leaning towards Yamaha whilst my other two colleagues are more inclined for a Honda or Suzi 150hp. Craft is a full Grp Fast Rescue Boat used in a training environment Having seen them used by a similar training school for over 10 years is the reason I'm leaning towards the Yam any advice appreciated

I replaced my twin setup in favour of a single. I swapped twin Mariner 60's for a single Suzuki DF140.

I was talking with a dealer on here about a couple of used engines he had in stock, as I was looking to go for a modern four stroke his recommendation was to go with a marque who had a dealer nearby, his point was, at some point you will need them.

You could do with talking to tony hill at seafari at easedale he is on here uses yam's and suzuki's for his boats his son runs wind farm support ribs too not sure what he uses but Tony's will advise. personally I have run yam's & suzuki's both great OMO recreational use only tohatsu & merc at work bullet proof the both of them.

Tony was actually my first port of call too because as you say, he runs both Yamaha and Suzuki.

You could also try Dave rose at ribquest hard to get hold of but worth the wait he trials all their boats with different engines lot of experience.

Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki any of the Jap stuff but consider E Tec as well and consider the service intervals
More so consider the Dealer accesability and back up from said Dealer.
Where you are situated (like us) it is important you have backup if you are doing boaty stuff on a Commercial basis. There are no 'bad' engines out there anymore !

if i was buying a new 150 right now i would seriously consider the new merc. best engine in the class probably right now.

Is it? Your profile says Edinburgh (maybe thats where you rather than the boat lives though).

If you are on "the East" then Bosuns Locker (since merging with FYM) are Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and Evinrude dealers so that doesn't really narrow your choice!

Ferry Marine (who have now moved to Livingston) are Mercury dealers.

If you are closest to Yampower then obviously Yamaha is their bag, but you'll not be that far from Mitchell's who are Evinrude and Mariner dealers, and probably close enough to Clyde Outboards who are Suzuki, Honda, Mariner, and Tohatsu agents.

The point being that around Glasgow and Edinburgh you have all the options, and you hope not to be in there every week so the question is not quite which is closest - but which (a) have an approach / attitude you like (b) is most likely to help you out when something goes wrong - especially if you are losing money whilst waiting to fix it.

My "smoker" makes Jambo's old V6 look like a fuel cell powered 'leccy when it comes to "visible emissions" , but I can say both Yampower & Mitchells are recommended. Not used the others for engine related stuff but the patter on here tells me I would if my geographical circumstance was different. Again probably out y our area but Davie (DA Marine if you looking on Google) also does Yam and I'd recommend him....

Work in Greenock at an MCA accredited training centre but up until recently lived in Edinburgh
