Ignorance? yeah, right! Wish I was as "ignorant" as you in being able to speak other languages.... I had a 101 (stretched it to 130) full restoration job, fitted with a JE tuned 4.6 lump, Rangie gears, O/D and......... am I repeating myself? Sorry... I'll get my coat....

towing vehicle.....still

Bloody hell, a can of worms it seems I've opened!!

Yup the yank 4x4 look & sound great, but drink fuel like there is no tomorrow!

Is there anything I really should avoid in particular though? (I've been told Discos bearkdown everyday)

Newer Disco's are supposedly more reliable (2003 onwards, so not cheap). The earlier Series II models are known for (un)reliability issues, though having said that my landlord's son has a Series II from before 2003 and has no problems with it, and that's used day in day out for towing large heavily laden trailers around on rough terrain (he's a farmer) and he uses it for recreational off-roading. Pretty much still showroom spec, and his never misses a beat.

Having said that his dad's Defender 90 300tdi does similar work, looks a right state but has only ever been in to the garage for usual servicing and to have a door fixed, never had any engine/transmission problems.

If you go for a Defender, either 90 or 110, and are going second hand, look for a decent 200/300tdi model over the newer TD5. A fair few people round here prefer the tdi's over the TD5 as they have more grunt in the low end.

And if you want to seriously go over the top, buy yourself a nice brand new TD6 Range Rover (about £50k) then send it to Jeremy Fearn and have him work his magic on it. New intercooler, remap the ECU, and suddenly you have stupid amounts of torque at your disposal, one of the best tow vehicles you could wish for, plus it looks the part too!

Narked is still a teenager( lucky devil) and may not yet have had the pleasures of ownership of a Solihull Shooting Brake. however it is fairly common knowledge that the tdi 200 is a better lump than the tdi 300 ( cant see that applying to a td5 though
