Why do people use PMs

I think they are great for making contact with someone on the Forum that you don't know but want to say something to privately - but once you know someone and they have become a friend wouldn't sharing you email address with them and using email be a lot more convenient ???

I'm just curious

some people can only access there email from one location (ie only work or only home) - whereas they can login to the website and access their pms from anywhere
