The times when it sounds Ok, you'll probably find that you're next to an X5 at the traffic lights. As soon as they turn green he''ll be gone and you'll be bangin' and cuffin' and puffin' off up the road again!

Why do people keep comparing the earlier Discoverys to things like the BMW X5? The X5 is Range Rover money.

Yes my 300tdi is sluggish and noisy - but compared to things like the Shogun 2.5 and the Isuzu 2.8 it is far better.

Compare a new Ranger Rover or even the new Discovery3 with the X5 and it is a different story.

ok seeing as i am now aware of the answer i will share it to save any folks wasting time searching and googling, i have done the rectification late this afternoon and it seems to have done the trick

it is a well known problem apparently with td5 discos and the problem and fix are known

would you believe the 13th wire of a part of the loom is not used and the ends of the wire are apparently sealed with silicone, but over time oil makes its way along the cable inside!! as it has broken down the silicone sealant and then deposits all over the red plug on the engine ecu and many times works its way into the ecu

i took my ecu out and the red plug was swimming in oil inside and this is causing the engine to run errrrrratic

check yours and if this is similar then clean everything down with with brake cleaner, allow to dry and then put it back together and you will be fine

mine is perfect again!!!

A bit of Googling refreshed the memory!!!

"Check the red plug on the ECU, if it is full of oil then you have the problem - clearing the oil out of the ECU connector and the plug should cure it short term, but the more permanent fix is a modified harness from Land Rover - however you may be able to seal the harness at both ends with silicon sealant or similar to stop oil getting in and coming out.
The injector harness appears on the engine at the left hand side of the front of the rocker cover (looking into the engine bay from the front of the vehicle)."

Sorry Codders. It was meant to be a joke. How 'bout a TD5 and a Fordson Major? Is that fairer.
