Lanzarote recommendations?

We're thinking about heading off for a bit of sun in the Feb half term, and Lanzarote seems like a good option: plenty of flights, not too expensive.

Does anyone here have any recommendations for places to stay or to avoid? Things to do apart from lounge on the beach and go for a blast on the Waverider RIB safari?

There is a great restaurant in a town called Nazarath. Built out of/into the lava.

Rumour has it that Omar Sharif won it in a game of backgammon.

There is a lunar landscape (lava fields) with a museum and a restaurant that uses the Earth's heat to cook, they also make mini geysers with water poured down holes in the ground.

See
Cesar Manrique Lanzarote artist for some more touristy things. I've been to the Mirador, the caves and the cactus garden.

You can also do a day trip to a little island just off the coast.

I haven't been there for over ten year when I used to go paragliding, some great cliffs and hills, it seemed very strange to find seashells in the ground 2000 feet up!

It can be very windy there!

The Volcanic Park (Timanfaya?) is pretty good. There are a few nice lava tube excursions too. The diving off Puerta del Carmen is OK (50m shore dives). Overall though, not my favourite place - too barren outside town and too commercialised in town, however the WX is primo in February. IIRC there are lots of way to amuse wains/empty yer wallet on the island.

There are better places in the archipelago for jaded, grumpy RIBnet Admins (IMO), but unless yer kids are easily amused, they'd get cabin fever there - nothing but quiet nights, long sunny days, good food and walking - lots of prime walking, AND the only way there is by boat....

Pay'd "Costa Teguise" a visit last month, nice place, clean, tidy not too noisy and with a good selection of decent Resteraunts. Worth a visit, especially good for windsurfing if your up for it !

Didn't enjoy the Costa Teguise end of the island - bit like a large Butlins. We're off to Playa Blanca next April and really enjoyed Playa De Carmon last time we went.

We go diving when out there so not sure on what else there is to do.

We stayed in ClubHotel Riu Paraiso Lanzarote Resort in Playa Del Carmen. Found the hotel really good although my one reservation was it was more geared towards the "german" market with this being the majority of guests. Didnt affect us too much but i certainly noticed it.

Luckily they didny get up at 3am to put the towels on the sunbeds, mainly as there were plenty to go round and the towel chap wouldnt arrive to hand them out until 9am.

The area itself was fairly Q but this hotel is stuck well out to one end of the resort so didnt really get into the heart of playa del carmen.

As stated by another, we enjoyed the trip up into the fiery mountains.

I find that I like operations geared towards Germans. They tend to be run the way I like - smoothly, so long as you go with the flow.

Of course, I always make a point of telling them early on that I'm not English...
But that might not work next year

Thanks Kerny! I haven't had as good a larf for days. That's a priceless piece and MUST have been written by an Irishman. I bet you didn't understand the half of it, but believe me when I say it's channelling a good four million of us....

Spent 10 days in costa teguise last month, sands beach resort, thoroughly enjoyed it and would return tomorrow. Had three young kids to keep entertained and it certainly ticked the boxes on that front. Did a bit of touring about, found the hire car very useful :-dinner whilst watching sunset on west of island was special. Some of the big marinas worth a visit too.
Even managed to buy a boat.....

My first holiday on lanzarote, I honestly was skeptical but wholly enjoyed our family visit and will be back.
