I'm off to New York - where shall I go?

I'm off to NY a week on thursday and was just wondering if any of you chaps who may have been there (or even live there!) could suggest good places to visit during the day and go out to for a drink in the evenings.

I would love to go to some roof top bars and real nice DJ bars/clubs etc, but obviously don't want to order a drink at the bar and realise I have to morgage my parent's house to pay for it!

Any tips would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Go armed with a Lonely Planet Guide. Simply, a great read.

cool, I'd recommend the following:

if you want to meet virgin atlantic hosties - Star Bar (5th/6th avenue),

for views of NY - the High Bar on Lexington Avenue or Peninsula Hotel on 5th Avenue

daytime for chilling out there's the roof garden metro musuem of art on 5th Avenue

and avoid 40/40 bar like the plague.

Hi Tim>
I owe you several drinks but dont expect me to lend you my credit card until you get back!!
Depending on where abouts you are in NY there are good places and not so good places. Where ever you go it is not cheap! A lot of good bars around South Street Sea Port in lower Manahatton, good views and lots of classic boats.
The bar that is best is a place called the Red Rock West jusdt up the river behind Chelsea Piers. Be prepared to be blown away! The movie "Ugly Coyote" was based on this bar and is only a small representaion of the real thing. Open till very late then if you are hungry, go for a burger in the "rail carrage" just down the road.
Have fun, we did (and do)

Would love to go to the USA but seriously object to the way they treat tourists coming in - even British ones!!! No way do I want them sticking all my biometrics on some dodgy database that they can sell to the highest bidder!!!

Mexicans have the right idea - just walk in without saying "hello"!!!

Getting in and out of NY is a slight pain in the arse, but last time I was there, the time taken from disembarking to lighting up a tab outside was 25min, not too excessive and not a reason to miss out on a great city IMHO. As for personal details being held, its not a million miles away from the amount of data held on us in the UK...
