You could do that with an Audi A8 - prob not much worse offroad!!! Or even better an RS6.....

I drove a Turaeg thing - the V10 jobbie - it was awesome but it ain't an offroader that's for sure - just a jacked up estate. The Cayenne is pretty much the same.

i dont do hardly any off roading in the landy except to carry the bikes up to the hills so we can go off roading so an x5 or cayenne would be perfect

if i lived on the side of a mountain then maybe i would go for something more purposeful off road

Sorry Mate, but those cars are sick. Es hates the X5 and the whole image that goes with it. We live in the land of the long haired surfer, the names I've been called whil'st driving it I couldn't post on here. The Chelsea tractor backlash has done it's work. Designer labels have had their day, and those cars are like wearing the Tshirt with 'Big Knob' splashed across the front, in my opinion.

Owning a Cayenne is not about driving, it's about trying to look well off to all those around you. If driving is you're thing and you need space then a 5 series estate would eat a Cayenne.

if i spent my time worrying about what others thought i would probably run around in an electric car but alas i dont give a monkeys. Handling, performance and quality for me together with reliability and the greenies can worry someone else!! the mrs drives the landy most of the time so not sure if she gets any grief. when i was towing the rib thru a village the other week coming back home some local shouted out i must be mad towing the boat or something like that thru his village. I shouted some advice back but he did not look very impressed!

no 5 series is too small hence the 7

i would like the 4.4 x5 or a cayenne turbo as a near ideal car. I like the engineering and quality and the handling so i shall be saving my pennys, lots of folks hate em but i like them i must admit. not sure any 5 series would eat a proper cayenne, they can do the nurburg ring in similar times to the 911 turbo, so cant be all bad.

back on point, defenders are great if you like them and they are practical for what you want, i was oggling a nice new one at ichenor slip at the weekend, looked very smart but i would not personally have one next.

most people i have ever spoken to are not keen on the cayenne so i think i am one of the few fans so probably not doing it because of what others think!

black rs6 avant now for sale if your interested chris.

Will fit your family, dogs and boat gear in her, still get you from a to b quicker than nearly any other car on the road, tow your rib and be inconspicious. A Cayenne will make you feel nauseaus after 5 min above 60mph, be much much slower and get you on the wrong side of the anti4x4 brigade.

Personally, Discovery 3 TDV6 se or hse. Brilliant on road manners and off road?? Well goes without saying.

Or you might want to wait for the new V8 diesel Range Rover...............

Good though the new Discovery 3 is it is NOT as good offroad as a Defender - especially a Defender fitted with traction control.

We drove both last month across some seriously dodgy terrain - the Discovery would leave all other 4x4s standing except for the Defender and possibly a Suzuki sj. Wouldn't fancy towing with the suzuki though.....

On road it is a totally different case off course!!!

To see what Defenders and older Discoverys are capable of watch the old Camel trophy vids - incredible stuff - the G4 challenge is so tame.

Cross big boulders without getting hung up for a start.

Also axle articulation is not in the same league - traction control tends to mask this problem a little BUT there is no substitute for keeping all 4 wheels on the ground.

For what it is the Disco 3 is amazing but it won't take the hammering a Defender will.
