3000 kg tug

Hi guys

If a man were to purchase a new boat which weighs 3000kg, excluding fuel and trailer What would people recommend as a tow vehicle?

Wouldn't - you will be illegal on a car licence. Things like Landies can legally tow up to 3500kgs. Unless you can find a nice light aluminium trailer that can carry 3 tonnes you will be illegal - unless it's different in Ireland!!!

A 6 litre+ 4 WD diesel truck or a 6 team of Clydesdales.

If you go for the 6 team don't forget the shovel.

A 7.5 tonne truck.

You might get away with a landy-I seem to remember Jono Garton (or someone else maybe?) saying he had vacuum assisted brakes on a trailer with a landy and could tow up to 5 tonnes legally with the assisted braking system. It wouldn't be cheap to put on there though.

The LR published towing weight for a trailer with coupled brakes is 4000kg as far as I recall. I don't think any "normal" 4x4s go above this unless you go for something like one of the big Ford pickups i.e. F350 or something, I was looking at something about one of those the other day and I think you can get a towing pack rated to 12000lb!

Having said all this it depends on the law in the area and how it's enforced. I towed a dumper with my Discovery on private property which was about 5.5 tons all up weight - the Discovery towed it easily - trailer didn't like it much though - when reversing the tyres were trying to come off the rims!!!

It's a nice CAR!!!

For the same money you can get any new Discovery or even a Range Rover Sport - personally I wouldn't get a Range Rover Sport either - the normal one is good enough but better offroad.

Just remember very low profile alloys have no place on something that may go offroad - even if it's only driving over some small rocks at the end of a slipway.

I would have a Disco 3 with the 2.7 v6 tdi and an auto box. Didn't realise how good they were until I had a ride on the Landrover Experience stand at MPH 06 in the NEC. Incredible, you need to try it.

Yep I would have to agree with you, best car I have owned!

My best friend has a X5 & it has broken down more times than I have had hot dinners!!!!

It is soooo unreliable he has just taken out a extended warranty! To think he got rid of a one of the last of the old shape Discos for some thing more reliable!
