SIB Daytrip - Gimli - Gull Harbour round trip

I had a nice daytrip today on Lake Winnipeg from from Gimli to Gull Harbour, across to Black Island and back to Gimli. Not only is Gimli the hub of the largest Icelandic population outside of Iceland, it is a town so cool that the worlds most well known dwarf was named after it (not too sure about that last factoid). In any case the weather was sunny and hot (about 30 C) and it was great, as always, to be on the water. Round trip was 177 km and consumed about 60 liters of gas.

Here is the general area circled in red.

...and the route I took. The route on the way up is the more roundabout one to the west:

At the northeast tip of Hecla Island is a neat little resort called Gull Harbour. I stopped there for lunch...

... and took some photos - of which only one turned out;

I then proceeded eastward along the south shore of Black Island until I reached a silica sand pit operation that had been abandoned about 25 (so I'm told) years ago...

...and took some more pictures;

There were some pretty interesting colour contrasts between the sheet white silica sand, the reds in the pit beds from all the iron.

I probably should have taken some more pictures of the rusted out landings for the sand barges. They were fascinating but required extreme caution to walk on.

My rubber chariot.
