Anchor Line/s?

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how much anchor line they carry with them & the diameter of it please.
What breaking strain is required?

My anchor is a 3.5kg 4 prong with a meter of chain & I'm wondering what line to stick on it!

Pete

Anchor & Warp

Hi Pete.

I cary 10kg Anchor on 5metres of 3/8" galvanised chain attached to 50metres of warp, 4 ply synthetic rope.

Try some of the discount chandlerys they sell sets all ready to use just attach anchor.

Cheers

Best rope for anchors is Octoplait, but it normally costs a fortune. However, buy mail order from this guy: clive@douglas01.freeserve.co.uk at loads less than retail.

or look on Ebay - he trades as: The_Rigging_Loft

My 12mm octoplait came in at £1.50 per metre and he does all sorts of different rope. I also bought floating line (to use for stern lines) from him at 75p per metre.

I have 60m of 12mm Octoplait and 10m chain on a 7.5kg anchor but you won't need anything like that! It's suitable for a boat up to 10m anchoring in a depth of up to 15m. As long as you've got a few metres of chain on the anchor you should be OK.

Hang on guys he has a 4m boat not the QE2.

Pete, your anchor is fine and the size that most club dive boats would have. chain is a bit short so buy 3 - 5 metres of 6 mm, it really does make a difference to the holding power. Any rope less than 10mm in dia is going to be hard work to pull up as it cuts your hands. 30m would be good and not to big a coil. 3 strand nylon is cheap and long lasting with good abrasion resistance. Should be 50 - 75p per metre.

Thanks Pete

I've been reading what people carry on their boat & thinking 'there ain't a hope in hell' I'm carrying all that gear.
So 10mm x 30-40m + 2-3m of chain.
Magic!

Pete
