9.9/10hp outboard wanted

Hi all, I’m looking out for a clean, safe and reliable 9.9/10hp outboard to power a 3m inflatable has my 5hp doesn’t have the wow factor to keep my kids interested/entertained enough to play or go fishing in the sea. If there is such a second hand animal for around £600 ........or am I being a little ambitious! Tony

If you want something clean, reliable and safe in that size then that the price bracket you are in.

There's wiggle room though

Hi A1an, I guess you’re probably right. It’s wishful thinking on my part. Tony

If you have asked me in the past about "overpowering" your 3m with a 15hp I've probably cautioned against making a specific purpose to do that. However if you already have the 15hp then I'd just use that. It weighs the same as the 9.9 Yamaha 2-stroke and is only one component different on the engine intake side of things.

Hmmmm! I did ask this a while back and didn’t use it because I thought it would affect the insurance ie in case of a claim because the 3m inflatable is only rated to 10hp It weighs in at 38kgs approximately. But on previous threads I have been advised about having too much forward thrust on the transom.

To expand...

If you were asking about buying a new (or expensive used) sole outboard for a SIB rated max 10hp my advice would be to keep it to the rated HP.

However if you already have the 15HP outboard so no extra expenditure and it would be used occasionally in conjunction with the normal use 5HP. I would ask/inform the insurance company as I've heard in many cases they don't have a problem then happily use it.

If you ever wished the 15HP to be the sole outboard only used on the 3m and it concerned you constantly overpowering then the Yamaha can be so easily downrated to 9.9HP.

Finally my advice might be different if your 15HP was something like a Mariner from a few years back which would weigh about 52Kg... but the Yamaha is quite light at 36Kg.

Too late to edit but the last para above should have referred to a 15hp 4-stroke Mariner to be specific.

Wow! Thank you for the thorough and informative reply Fenlander. I’ve taken all that on board so to speak. I don’t think I’ll be tampering with my old girl, I’ve had her 25 years and she’d never forgive me! And so...The hunt continues..... Again thanks for your help.

has the boat a ali floor if so, i would do what fenlander says stick some 10 hp stickers on the 15 and put a barrel stay from the transom to the floor for support or two, and save your dosh just be sensible when in the chop at WOT

yep still would and keep the foot off the gas

Fenlander will know why not down rate the 15 I do know the 15 can be down rated to a 13 just by limiting the throttle I was told by an agent to fall in line with some country's rules

I might be wrong but I wonder if Boozardy has two SIBs so still wants the 15hp power for the larger one??

In one Fenlander👍 My older sons play with the 3.2m which handles the 15hp Yam and a 3.0m for myself because it’s lighter to handle with the Honda, I have a little more independence and not reliant on them carrying/ attaching the engine, it’s great for pootling around in the lakes but doesn’t captivate my youngest son at sea.

So a quick limit on the throttle screw would help you keeping nearer the 10 hp for the small boat if you have lead boots as it were otherwise just use it IMO better to be overpowered than under
