Well that must have been closed cell then, open cell the water just passes straight through.

I don't think you can avoid a wet bum when you sit down regardless of foam type.

Closed cell foam? I thought the idea was open cell foam so that water could pass straight through rather than soaking into the cells of the foam?

Definitely don't use the existing base. You can easily get a new cushion made but I would advise getting a new base too as yours will be made of plywood (and therefore be already all furry...)...
