I'd always have the painter permanently attached, and shorter than than the boat to avoid getting caught in the prop. Can always use additional lines, or hitch onto painter

Depends what you mean by "beaching & mooring".

For mooring - which I interpret as tying up to a buoy or pontoon, as others have said a painter 12-15mm diameter line slightly shorter than the boat...
