Sounds like the sort of wheel nuts you used to get with alloy wheels back in the "cortina" days .
The days when if it fitted "sort of" it was ok and you checked your wheelnuts were tight every week...

may be worth trying a 100mm pcd wheel , there is less than 2mm difference between 4" and 100mm.
Would you also need to change mudguards ?
