Our, and I bet your local boot & shoe repairer has an overlocker machine which would have made short work of that stitching for a few beer tokens.

Yes I used the same plastic chairs in my Bonwitco's with 2 U shaped stainless sections under to trap the seat to the plank seat. OK with GRP fixings but not sure it would stand much leaning back on...
