Polyethylene doesn't become brittle until less than -70 deg C. Not all plastics are equal.

Rotomolded dinghies, and canoes have been around for a while (as have various storage tanks etc)...

stephen - have you thought about a moulded plastic boat? I would have thought it was cheaper than an Aluminium one. In fact you could probably have a 4m boat for less than the cost of new tubes.
