When I had the problem my fuel computer was a great help - I KNEW something was very wrong as when I opened the throttle the fuel consumption got better - 6gph at full throttle - I wish!!!

Could be fuel starvation. Either a blocked tank breather or a kinked pipe where it goes into the engine. Had a similar prob with my outboard - just pulled the fuel pipe out a bit and problem solved....
